Practice Snapshot
Age: 10U
Length: 60 minutes
Level: Intermediate / mixed ability
Main Focus: breakouts, support, first pass, wall play
Equipment: Pucks, cones, nets, tires or bumpers optional
Practice Flow
0:00-0:08 - Puck Retrieval Warmup
Players retrieve pucks from the corner, shoulder check, turn up ice, and make a short pass to a coach or teammate.
0:08-0:20 - First Pass Station
Defense retrieves, looks over shoulder, and makes a short first pass to a winger or center support option.
0:20-0:32 - Wall Support Station
Wingers work on getting low, opening up, receiving on the wall, and making the next pass.
0:32-0:44 - Center Swing Support
Centers practice coming low and slow, presenting a target, and supporting underneath the puck.
0:44-0:56 - Breakout to 2v1
Run a simple breakout that turns into a 2v1 rush. Keep the focus on support and first pass, not perfect routes.
0:56-1:00 - Quick Review
Ask players: Where should your support be when we win the puck?
Teaching Points
- Shoulder check before touching the puck.
- First pass should be simple and available.
- Wingers get low enough to help.
- Centers support underneath the puck.
- Do not skate away from the teammate who needs help.
Progressions
- Add passive forecheck pressure.
- Add a second outlet option.
- Turn the drill into a live 3v2.
- Reward teams for clean first passes.
Next Shift Challenge
In the next game, track how often players support the puck low instead of flying up ice too early.
