Practice Flow
0:00-0:10 - Defensive Footwork Warmup
Players work on pivots, backward skating, gap movement, and stick-on-puck habits.
0:10-0:25 - Corner Contain and Support
One defender contains, one supports, and one attacker tries to escape. Rotate quickly.
0:25-0:40 - Net-Front Box Out
Defenders practice body position, stick lifts, rebound awareness, and protecting the goalie.
0:40-0:55 - Low Zone 3v3
Play below the tops of the circles. Defenders must protect the middle and transition after winning the puck.
0:55-1:10 - Defensive Zone to Breakout
Start with pressure in the zone. Once defenders win possession, they must make a controlled breakout pass.
1:10-1:15 - Team Reflection
Ask players: What helped us defend before the shot happened?
Teaching Points
- Protect the middle first.
- Scan before the puck arrives.
- Communicate early.
- Stick on puck, body through hands.
- Win possession, then make a play.
Progressions
- Add a second attacker below the goal line.
- Require a breakout pass after every defensive win.
- Add a point player to force coverage decisions.
- Score the game by defensive stops plus clean exits.
Next Shift Challenge
At the next game, watch whether players defend the danger area or chase the puck. That tells you what to teach next.
